Scorpion Exo Combat Evolution helmet review

Scorpion Exo -Combat helmet with lugs on the sides

It's been a long time since the Scorpion Exo -fight caught my eye. But my patience was rewarded... The time has come for me to test the helmet Scorpion Exo -combat evo, with a more aggressive look... Equip yourself soldier, now you have to face the street!

New look, new helmet?

Nay! Only the “rigid mask” type chin guard has been revised for a more aggressive look. We can find it reminiscent of a samurai mask in terms of shape, or of a Hannibal Lecter type, given the design of the vents of this famous mask.

But then, can we interchange the mask of the Scorpion Exo Combat and the scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet ? I went to ask the question Scorpion Exo and this, as an average customer. Here is the email response they gave me in less than 24 hours:

Good morning,

Yes, the EXO-COMBAT and EXO-COMBAT EVO masks are compatible between the 2 models.

There are the following models:
Price: €34.32 including tax
EXO-COMBAT Mask matte black
Exo-combat mask white
Exo-combat evo mask matt black

Price: €44.15 including tax
EXO-COMBAT Mask Skull (black/white)
EXO-COMBAT Mask Stealth Dark Silver […]

In short, speed and efficiency, thank you Scorpion Exo .

The new Evo mask also fits the Scorpion Exo - Classic Combat helmet

The mask simply clips into the helmet and neodymium magnets reinforce the hold. If you have a pacemaker, Scorpion Exo recommends that you seek the advice of a doctor before using the Scorpion Exo Combat helmet (Evo or not). For my part, I can't wait for there to be more choice regarding exo-Combat Evo masks, just like the colors available for this helmet model.

The colors available, let’s talk about them!

Even if the number of colors remains limited compared to the old generation, there is choice. For the test, I used the “ Solid Matt » only available in black (for the moment?). Like all matte black helmets, watch out for nasty fingerprints!

Otherwise, it is also available in version Incursion, Unborn and Rockstar® energy drink.

Screen: one only

And this is one of the first bad points of scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet. Compared to the old version which was delivered with two SpeedView® screens namely light smoked and dark smoked, the Evo version only comes with a single light smoked SpeedView® screen. Even if it is indicated that it can only be used during the day, I assure you, it remains perfectly usable for night trips. Not much choice in winter at the same time. The most skeptical will be able to choose a perfectly colorless screen to avoid any problems with their insurance.

So, in summer should you take a dark smoke lens or can sunglasses be used in the helmet? Personally, I knew how to put on my glasses with thin arms. But if the branches are thick, it's clearly less comfortable.

The screen is very easily removable but the thickness of the fixing branches does not make you want to exercise excessively, for fear of breaking the screen.

Screen again: anti-fog technology and anti-scratch coating

Don't ask if you can put a Pinlock on the SpeedView® screen... The answer is no. But how does it work in bad weather? Well, given the ventilation of the helmet and the Everclear anti-fog treatment, fogging only becomes a problem around 0°C with thick fog.

It should also be noted that the screen is protected against scratches. During my test, I didn't make a single scratch on it. To do with time. At any rate, Scorpion Exo recommends replacing the SpeedView® screen every two years or after each impact.

A real jet and a fake crossover

Scorpion remains honest and points it out, whether in the instructions or even via a sticker affixed to the chin guard: even if it is made of EPS, the chin guard does not protect against impacts in any way. And this, despite its rigidity. But the helmet remains approved as jet helmet (ECE 22.05).

The chin guard will protect you from the elements and projections of all kinds (still). Namely: insects, gravel and punches when, in a burst of kindness, you desperately try to separate two individuals who are coming to blows (true).

Closure takes place via a micrometric buckle, simple as we like them.

The Scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet is a 2-in-1

A bib that makes us drool

Pardon the questionable pun. THE helmet Scorpion Exo -combat evo comes with a removable bib. Too removable by the way. Fixing is done by Velcro and a thin plastic tab to be wedged into the structure of the mask. Suffice it to say that it frequently comes off when you remove the helmet. This point definitely needs to be revisited…

A helmet that may not suit all heads

During my first spins with the helmet Scorpion Exo -combat evo, I wondered if I wasn't going to pass the test on to another editor. In fact, the pressure on my jaw was difficult to bear. However, I'm a size S, I took an S and it fits properly. It's undeniable. But we all know, it takes time for the foam to settle. So indeed, after a month, I already feel an improvement... But after 30 minutes, you start to feel it and that's a shame.

For use with mask

First reaction upon seeing the scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet : how to have good visibility with such a small viewing space? Well finally, the side visibility is excellent. On the other hand, the muffler shape reduces the visibility of the meter.

To be honest, I was expecting protection from the elements worthy of a full-face suit but it was not. Especially considering the mask's vents. First sustained rain (without being torrential), droplets trickle between the mask/screen joint, and end up in your face, carried away by the wind. Well, we're talking about fine droplets at a rate of one every 10 seconds and not a bucket of water... Once again, it's simply a jet helmet with additional protection. Moreover, when the thermometer does not want to rise higher than 5°C, wearing a hood becomes vital to protect your ears from the cold.

In terms of noise, the noise of the exhaust remains surprisingly attenuated, but if you ride on a machine without a screen, windshield, screen, pig nose... I can assure you that it's sure to bring a storm. In the event of a long journey, one piece of advice: don’t forget earplugs.

The original screen is very slightly smoked and requires the wearing of sunglasses when necessary.

For use without a mask

The weather is nice, it's hot, we want to ride in pure jet mode. We take off the mask in two seconds and replace it with two discreet covers to protect its fixing hole.

Two finishing covers hide the chin strap attachment when it is not in use.

It remains a jet, no revolution at this level. But the noise problem still remains.

In pure jet mode, the Scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet is a completely different helmet!

Dismantling of foams and maintenance of them

The interior of the jet helmet is made of Mesh and Kwikwick2® fabric, absorbent and breathable. On top of that, it is quite soft and comfortable.

All the foams can be dismantled very easily (once the mask has been removed) to be washed. Although the instructions tell us that machine washing is possible (in delicate laundry mode), hand washing is preferable.

Ventilation: a double dose

THE scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet retains the Scorpion Air Channel® system. To know : " two separate channels for dynamic and optimal ventilation, allowing better stability at high speed and reduction of parasitic noise. » Well, given the basic breakdown of the scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet despite wearing a mask, I admit that in the middle of winter, I did not use the ventilation of the helmet. Yes, to test necessarily. And since the lug is small and thin, it is best to operate it while stationary because it is not very practical to handle.

The Scorpion Air Channel system reinforces very present basic ventilation.

Weight

When Scorpion Exo announces the weight of the Evolution at 1250 g, I find them a little optimistic... Indeed, I weighed it at 1276 g without a mask and at 1425 g with a mask. A rather generous weight for a jet helmet, without making it unpleasant to wear.

My opinion: a pleasure headset above all

The Scorpion Exo -Combat Evo helmet, we love it especially for its badass look and its mask with a revisited design. Because I'll be honest, while it remains passable in many conditions, it's not a helmet intended to satisfy the most demanding motorcyclists... because of a few flaws. In short, it is a helmet that wants to stand out through its design, without neglecting the other essential elements: to enjoy with a minimum of comfort and safety.

I'm Gab', since I obtained the precious sesame in 2013, I am one of those who ride a motorcycle daily. Whether on my Sportster in mild weather or on my Africa Twin to face hostile weather conditions or to ride towards other horizons. Also a cyclist and sometimes a motorist, I advocate sharing, responsibility and collective wisdom on the road. Regardless, I'm looking for equipment that combines style, efficiency and protection.
